For the season when strength fails and whispers come
Don’t reject me in my old age. Don’t forsake me when my strength fails. For my enemies talk about me. Those who watch for my soul conspire together, saying, “God has forsaken him. Pursue and take him, for no one will rescue him.” God, don’t be far from me. My God, hurry to help me. Let my accusers be disappointed and consumed. Let them be covered with disgrace and scorn who want to harm me. But I will always hope, and will add to all of your praise. My mouth will tell about your righteousness, and of your salvation all day, though I don’t know its full measure. I will come with the mighty acts of the Lord Yahweh. I will make mention of your righteousness, even of yours alone. God, you have taught me from my youth. Until now, I have declared your wondrous works. Yes, even when I am old and gray-haired, God, don’t forsake me, until I have declared your strength to the next generation, your might to everyone who is to come.
The fear comes quietly, not as a shout but as a question: when your legs give out and your hands forget their tasks, will God still be near? The psalmist knew that fear and put it into words: 'Don't reject me in my old age. Don't forsake me when my strength fails.' There is no shame in needing to say that.
You can hear the whispers around him: 'God has forsaken him. Pursue and take him, for no one will rescue him.' That is the sound of a room emptying, of a phone that does not ring, of a life being written off. The psalmist does not argue with the whisperers. He turns his face toward God and says, 'Don't be far from me. My God, hurry to help me.'
Here is what the Father calls you in this gray-haired hour: his own. And here is what Jesus has done with the exact fear you carry. On the cross, he was forsaken in your place; now he lives to intercede for you. The One who was forsaken prays for you. The psalmist asked for breath enough to declare God's strength to the next generation. That is still your calling, not because your usefulness earns his love, but because he has already claimed you.
The One who was forsaken prays for you.
God, when my strength fails, hold me. When the whispers come, be nearer than they are. I am yours, old and gray-haired, and I trust you to keep me to the end. In Jesus' name, amen.
