For the days when the body weakens but grace is not exhausted.

Paul places aging beneath the image of a lantern: its outer casing may tarnish while its flame is renewed. The visible decline is real, and the apostle does not call decay imaginary. Yet he refuses to let what can be seen give the final account of a Christian’s life. The Christian does not faint because the outward man is wasting while the inward man is being renewed day by day. The outer casing may tarnish while Christ renews the inner life day by day.

That logic also corrects our judgment of affliction. Paul calls it light and momentary only in comparison with the eternal weight of glory it is preparing, not because pain feels slight or passes quickly. I confess that I often measure God’s work by the condition of the visible lantern: less strength seems to mean less grace. But the verse redirects our gaze. The seen things are temporal; the unseen things are eternal. Faith does not deny the body’s wasting. It receives a truer scale by which to weigh it.

This inward renewal is not self-generated brightness. At the cross, Christ entered the full humiliation of bodily weakness and bore sin’s judgment. In his resurrection, the Father vindicated him and opened the future toward which our renewal moves. The risen Christ now gives his people grace that reaches deeper than outward decline. He does not promise that the casing will stop tarnishing; he promises a glory weight greater than the affliction and a life secured beyond what the eye can measure.
