For the aging season when being needed stops feeling like proof of life.

The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree. He will grow like a cedar in Lebanon. They are planted in Yahweh’s house. They will flourish in our God’s courts. They will still produce fruit in old age. They will be full of sap and green, to show that Yahweh is upright. He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.
Psalm 92:12–15

What if bearing fruit in old age is something slower than the output you are forcing? You have turned fruit into busyness and busyness into proof that you still matter. The false refuge is being needed. You cling to usefulness because it feels like your only excuse for taking up space.

The palm is not straining to be needed. It is planted in the Lord’s house; it flourishes in God’s courts. The sap rises because the roots are in the Rock, not because the tree has made itself indispensable. Your fruit is not a quota. It is the overflow of being fastened to the Lord, who is your rock and has no unrighteousness in him.

Christ was cut down in death and raised by the Father. His resurrection becomes your sap; the Spirit keeps you full of sap and green when your strength thins. The promise remains: fruit will still come in old age, but it will look less like accomplishment and more like a settled witness. Your fruit in old age is to show the Lord is upright, not to prove you are needed. So will you stop proving and be planted?

Your fruit in old age is to show the Lord is upright, not to prove you are needed.
Prayer

Lord, let the Spirit’s sap be my fruit.
