For the season when strength thins and love must be remembered more deeply than ability.

Like a father has compassion on his children, so Yahweh has compassion on those who fear him. For he knows how we are made. He remembers that we are dust. As for man, his days are like grass. As a flower of the field, so he flourishes. For the wind passes over it, and it is gone. Its place remembers it no more. But Yahweh’s loving kindness is from everlasting to everlasting with those who fear him, his righteousness to children’s children,

Frailty is not a spiritual failure to hide. The verse looks plainly at the field flower: it flourishes for a little while, then the wind passes over it, and it is gone. Our bodies bear that same brevity. God knows how we are made; he does not mistake dust for permanence or demand from us the strength of a creature that never fades.

Yet the fading flower is not the whole argument. The verse moves from human transience to Yahweh’s compassion and loving kindness. He remembers our dust, while his righteousness reaches to children’s children. I am tempted to measure my worth by how much strength remains, but Scripture measures my condition more truthfully: I am frail, known, and held within mercy that does not wither when I do.

This everlasting love is not an abstract kindness floating above our weakness. In the incarnation, the Son entered our dust; at the cross, Christ bore judgment for sinners who cannot preserve themselves; in the resurrection, he rose with an indestructible life. Therefore, frailty may tell the truth about the flower, but it cannot tell the final truth about those who fear Yahweh. Frailty is real; everlasting love is not fragile.

Prayer

Father, have compassion on us and remember that we are dust. Keep us among those who fear you, trusting your loving kindness from everlasting to everlasting, through Jesus Christ.
