A psalm for ordinary days and terrifying couriers.

The psalmist gives you a house set deep in struck bedrock. A courier runs up through the dust with evil news such as diagnosis or betrayal, and the floor does not tremble. Evil news is real, but it cannot shake what Yahweh has established. The promise is not that no courier comes; the promise is that the man 'will never be shaken' and 'remembered forever,' because his heart is steadfast, trusting in Yahweh.

Look at the verse's logic: “His heart is steadfast, trusting in Yahweh. His heart is established.” Trust is not produced by a steady heart; a steady heart is produced by trust. The order matters. I confess that I have tried to brace my heart by rehearsing my own resolve, as if courage could be flogged from a will that still expects the worst. But the psalm does not command me to tighten my chest; it invites me to set my trust on Yahweh. The eye leaves the courier's report and goes to the throne.

Then who is this righteous one? At the cross, the worst courier of all arrived: sin, death, and the curse of the law; and Christ saw his adversaries and did not fear in the end. He trusted Yahweh, and Yahweh established him on the third day in a resurrection that now serves as your foundation. United to him, you are no longer a self-made heart; you are a house whose steadiness is Christ's own.
