For the exhausted person who needs permission to receive care before taking the next step.

When he saw that, he arose, and ran for his life, and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there. But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree. Then he requested for himself that he might die, and said, “It is enough. Now, O Yahweh, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.” He lay down and slept under a juniper tree; and behold, an angel touched him, and said to him, “Arise and eat!” He looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on the coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank, and lay down again. Yahweh’s angel came again the second time, and touched him, and said, “Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you.” He arose, and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb, God’s Mountain.

“Arise and eat” comes before the road. What do you do when exhaustion turns obedience into a threat? You call it faithfulness and keep moving. You use urgency as a hiding place. Elijah reaches the juniper tree, asks to die, and collapses. Your body is not a nuisance to spiritual maturity. It may be telling the truth about your limits.

God gives Elijah sleep. He gives a cake baked on coals and a jar of water. God gives Elijah sleep and food before he gives him the road. The angel says the journey is too great for him, not that he is too weak to matter. Your false refuge may be one more instruction—a sermon, a plan, or a promise to try harder. In his incarnation, Christ entered a real body that hungered, slept, and grew tired.

Christ’s mercy reaches your depleted body before your next assignment. Rest and food expose the lie that you must earn care by finishing the road. Receive the provision before you, and let the risen Christ’s intercession hold what your strength cannot. Will you stop calling collapse devotion and receive today’s bread and sleep?

Lord Jesus, teach me to receive needed sleep and food without shame. Amen.
