For the soul too weary to rest on its own.

The Shepherd's hand presses firmly on my flank, and I go down into the grass. The picture is a sheep being laid down, not drifting into rest. Green pastures are not where I naturally land. I am too wired to graze, too anxious to stop. So the Shepherd does for me what I cannot do for myself: he makes me lie down.

The verse says "I shall lack nothing" before it says anything about the pastures. The order matters: my provision is a person before it is a place. Yet here is my confession: I have lived as though the grass depended on my worrying, as though still waters would evaporate if I stopped paddling. The Shepherd leads me beside still waters, not raging ones, and restores my soul. Restoration is not a reward for my striving; it is the Shepherd's own work, and he does it for his name's sake. My exhaustion does not scandalize him; it is the very thing he came to meet.

And here is the deepest pasture: the Shepherd who makes me lie down is the one who lay down in the grave himself. The Shepherd's hand that presses me down is the hand that was pierced for me. Jesus, the good Shepherd, laid down his life for the sheep, and on the third day he took it up again. My soul is restored because his was not left in death. The green pasture is resurrection ground, where my tired soul grazes on a Shepherd who has already passed through death's shadow and come out the other side.
