For the weary who have turned stillness into a task

My soul rests in God alone. My salvation is from him. He alone is my rock, my salvation, and my fortress. I will never be greatly shaken.
Psalm 62:1–2

"My soul rests in God alone." Alone — that's the word that undoes you. Not God plus your usefulness, not God plus your reputation for handling things well. When was the last time your soul rested in God alone, with nothing of yours added to the ledger?

But you've made rest itself a performance. You watch yourself being still, grading it. You brace against being shaken the way you brace against everything else — with effort. The false refuge is rest as an achievement: if you rest well enough, you'll earn the quiet. So even your stillness is a task with a deadline.

Here is what God in Christ does for this exact condition: he was the one who never needed to perform. His soul rested in the Father's will even when the earth shook beneath the cross. That rest is yours, not a standard to meet but a fortress already built. You are not the keeper of the walls; you are the one sheltered inside them.

Will you stop holding the fortress and let it hold you?

You are not the keeper of the walls; you are the one sheltered inside them.
Prayer

Lord, teach my bracing soul to be held.
