For the season of finite days and work that needs grace.
So teach us to count our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Relent, Yahweh! How long? Have compassion on your servants! Satisfy us in the morning with your loving kindness, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, for as many years as we have seen evil. Let your work appear to your servants, your glory to their children. Let the favor of the Lord our God be on us. Establish the work of our hands for us. Yes, establish the work of our hands.
Picture a workbench at morning, its surface holding both a short measure of days and the unfinished work of human hands. The psalm does not let us call our labor permanent or our lives endless. We need to be taught to count: not merely number time, but receive its limits until wisdom grows. A finite life is not a failed life, though it is a dependent one.
The prayer moves from counting to crying: “How long?” Wisdom does not anesthetize grief; it tells the truth about affliction, years of evil, and the need for compassion. Then it asks for morning satisfaction, not endless achievement, so that gladness can inhabit the days actually given. I confess that I often treat limited time as an accusation, pressing my hands to prove that my life matters. But the psalm asks first for loving kindness, then for work established under the Lord’s favor.
That favor is not an abstract approval floating above our labor. In Christ, grace took flesh, and at the cross the One whose days were numbered bore judgment for sinners who cannot make their work secure. His resurrection means our labor is placed before a living Lord, not offered to death’s final verdict. The work of our hands is received, not secured, when grace teaches us to count our days. We may work faithfully, but only Christ establishes what our hands cannot establish.
The work of our hands is received, not secured, when grace teaches us to count our days.
Yahweh, teach us to count our days and give us a heart of wisdom; satisfy us in the morning with your loving kindness. Let the favor of the Lord our God be on us, and establish the work of our hands for us, for Christ’s sake. Amen.
