One table, two sisters, an empty chair, and a name called twice.

Martha received him into her house, and the door was the easy part. The story keeps its eye on her: she was distracted with much serving, while Mary sat at Jesus’ feet and heard his word. The house became a set table, and the one empty place on that table was hers. She spent the whole meal carrying dishes toward the guest, but never reached the seat from which a welcome is spoken. The feast was meant for Jesus; the hostess never sat down to it.

Jesus does not say the food was a waste; he names the state of her soul. “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is needed.” I confess the same shape in me: I have served the Lord with my hands and not heard him with my ears, and then asked for a helper before I would let him pull me down to his feet. Busyness is not the issue; the issue is the many things that fill the ear.

Mary’s chosen good part will not be taken away, not because she held it tightly, but because the good part was taken in her place. On the cross, everything was taken from Christ: garments, friends, and even his breath; he surrendered all, so nothing can be taken from those he loves. The good part cannot be taken away, for it has already been given. The empty chair at Martha’s table is now a place the Risen One fills.
