For the soul addressed without denial.
Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise him for the saving help of his presence. My God, my soul is in despair within me. Therefore I remember you from the land of the Jordan, the heights of Hermon, from the hill Mizar. Deep calls to deep at the noise of your waterfalls. All your waves and your billows have swept over me. Yahweh will command his loving kindness in the daytime. In the night his song shall be with me: a prayer to the God of my life. I will ask God, my rock, “Why have you forgotten me? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?” As with a sword in my bones, my adversaries reproach me, while they continually ask me, “Where is your God?” Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise him, the saving help of my countenance, and my God.
“Why are you in despair, my soul?” The question reaches you without denial. Your disturbance is real. The psalm does not make the waves and billows disappear by naming God; it brings your inner flood before him.
Your soul may turn pain into a verdict: God has forgotten me. The reproach, “Where is your God?” becomes an echo inside you. A specific false refuge is numbness—scrolling, withdrawing, or demanding instant relief. It cannot be a rock. It leaves you alone with the water.
“Hope in God” is not a command to pretend the flood is shallow. It is a summons toward the saving help of his presence. In the night, the song becomes prayer to the God of your life. Christ entered human grief, bore judgment at the cross, and intercedes for you when you are downcast. Hope in God does not deny the waves; it turns your despair toward his presence. Name the true question and ask him to keep you near while the waters remain loud.
Hope in God does not deny the waves; it turns your despair toward his presence.
Lord Jesus, keep my downcast soul turned toward your presence, and teach me to hope without pretending the waves are calm. Amen.
