Despair of life under the verdict of self-reliance, met by the God who raises the dead.

To despair even of life is more than ordinary discouragement. Has your distress become so heavy that tomorrow feels like an accusation? The condition is not merely sadness. You are treating your endurance as a last defense, seeking safety in self-reliance—the false refuge that says you must keep yourself alive by control. But the apostolic sentence exposes that refuge: the crisis becomes a place where trust in yourself is broken.

God does not answer this despair with a command to feel stronger. In Christ, he entered death rather than standing at a safe distance from it. The crucified Jesus was raised, and his resurrection establishes the God who raises the dead as your refuge. Despair may tell you that death has the final word; the risen Christ denies that verdict. He has delivered, he does deliver, and every present mercy rests on his future faithfulness—not on your ability to manufacture hope.

Your sentence of death is not a reason to pretend calm. It is a summons to place your hope where Paul placed his: in God who raises. The God who raises meets your despair where self-reliance has died. Will you bring this hour to the risen Christ instead of asking your failing strength to save you?
