For the season when hope must be recalled while affliction remains.

You have removed my soul far away from peace. I forgot prosperity. I said, “My strength has perished, along with my expectation from Yahweh.” Remember my affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the bitterness. My soul still remembers them, and is bowed down within me. This I recall to my mind; therefore I have hope. It is because of Yahweh’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness. “Yahweh is my portion,” says my soul. “Therefore I will hope in him.”
Lamentations 3:17–24

Affliction has not only hurt you; it has carried peace out of reach and made former well-being feel almost unreal. Your strength may feel spent, and expectation from Yahweh may seem like a word your mind can no longer hold. The soul in this verse is bowed down by remembered misery, not corrected for being bowed. That distinction matters: despair can be an honest report of injury without becoming your final name.

Then the passage makes a deliberate movement: “This I recall to my mind.” Picture a hand setting one remembered mercy beside a bowl of bitter herbs, while the bitterness remains fully present. The sentence does not erase wormwood, and the new morning does not deny yesterday’s pain. It recalls Yahweh’s loving kindnesses and unfailing compassion until hope is no longer a spontaneous feeling but a truth placed again before the mind. Hope can be deliberately recalled without pretending to feel hopeful.

Jesus says, through his cross and resurrection, that affliction is not evidence that you have been abandoned: he entered suffering, bore judgment, and rose bodily. The Father calls you his own in Christ, while your soul is still learning to say, “Yahweh is my portion.” This is specific mercy, not a demand for quick brightness: the risen Christ intercedes for the bowed, and the Spirit keeps bringing the Father’s compassion to mind.

Hope can be deliberately recalled without pretending to feel hopeful.
Prayer

Lord Jesus, I release my demand to feel hope immediately. Bring your cross and resurrection before my mind again. Keep me from being consumed, and teach my bowed soul to receive today’s mercy. Amen.
