For questions that need a steadier place to stand.
What then shall we say about these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who didn’t spare his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how would he not also with him freely give us all things? Who could bring a charge against God’s chosen ones? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, yes rather, who was raised from the dead, who is at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Could oppression, or anguish, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? Even as it is written, “For your sake we are killed all day long. We were accounted as sheep for the slaughter.” No, in all these things, we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from God’s love which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Your questions may be persistent, not rebellious: a mind trying to understand what suffering, accusation, or fear seems to contradict. Oppression and anguish can make love feel distant, while the heart keeps asking whether anything solid remains. That unsettled state deserves honesty. Scripture does not pretend that peril, nakedness, persecution, or death are small experiences, and it does not require you to call them good before you can confess that they hurt.
The passage steadies these questions by moving from accusation to Christ’s action. Jesus is the one who died, was raised, and now makes intercession for his people; the question is therefore not whether you can defend yourself perfectly, but whether his finished work has failed. Questions may remain, but they cannot become a wall between you and Christ’s love. The risen Christ is not merely an idea supporting your faith. He is the living one who represents you before the Father when your own thoughts feel like a prosecution.
Paul names height, depth, what is present, what is coming, and every created power, then finds none capable of separating believers from God’s love in Christ Jesus. “More than conquerors” does not mean instant certainty or escape from pain. It means that even these forces cannot take the questioned heart outside the reach of the crucified and risen Lord. Your steadiness may be small today, but Christ’s intercession is not small, and his love does not depend on the strength of your conclusions.
Questions may remain, but they cannot become a wall between you and Christ’s love.
Jesus, I release my unanswered questions to your care. Keep me near your cross and trust your intercession when my heart cannot find certainty. Amen.
