A devotional for night terrors and daylight dread.
He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of Yahweh, “He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.” For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler, and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers. Under his wings you will take refuge. His faithfulness is your shield and rampart. You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day, nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that wastes at noonday.
“Secret place” is not a password for escaping the world. Where do you run when terror comes by night and an arrow seems aimed at you by day? You may call constant checking shelter. It is only a watchtower inside your mind, and it never sleeps.
Psalm 91 gives you more than a command to feel calm. It sets you beneath wings, behind a shield, within a rampart, while pestilence still moves through darkness and destruction still wastes at noon. God's faithfulness is a shield before fear becomes quiet. In Christ, God came near to human terror. Jesus endured the night of betrayal, the day of execution, and the grave; his resurrection declares that terror does not have the final word. His intercession shelters you before the Father when terror exposes your helplessness. It is not a promise that every danger will disappear.
Stop appointing fear as the watchman of your hours. Bring the night terror and the daylight dread into the refuge named by the psalm. Will you trust the faithful Christ before your circumstances become safe?
God's faithfulness is a shield before fear becomes quiet.
Lord Jesus, intercede for me when night magnifies danger and day presents it plainly; keep me beneath your faithful shelter through your cross and resurrection.
