For the days when fear feels larger than your sense of belonging.
But now Yahweh who created you, Jacob, and he who formed you, Israel, says: “Don’t be afraid, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by your name. You are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, and flame will not scorch you.
The distress here is more than ordinary fear. It is the feeling of being overtaken—thoughts rushing, the body braced, familiar ground disappearing beneath you. When life becomes too powerful to manage, even your name can seem to wash away, leaving you only a frightened person trying not to sink.
Isaiah speaks of a person passing through waters, not standing safely on the shore. Feel the cold pull, the noise closing over your ears, the uncertainty of each step. The promise does not pretend the passage is shallow or painless. It says the waters do not have authority to define the one who passes through them. The waters may surround your body without owning your name.
Before the danger is described, the Father calls you redeemed, named, and his own. Jesus says this belonging is not reserved for the composed; the incarnate Son has entered our vulnerable flesh, and at the cross he carried the judgment that could finally separate you from God. Your fear is real, but it is not your deepest possession. Christ is.
Jesus, receive my fear and keep me in your care. When I feel overwhelmed, remind me that I belong to you. Amen.
