For the soul learning to fear God rightly while resting in the Father’s precise care.

Jesus does not dismiss the danger of human violence. Those who can kill the body cannot kill the soul, yet God is able to judge both soul and body. Holy fear therefore begins with a sober correction: people may threaten what is visible, but they are not ultimate. The command “don’t be afraid” is grounded in a greater fear, not in pretending danger is small.

Then Jesus opens the Father’s ledger of attention. Two sparrows can be purchased for almost nothing, yet not one falls to the ground apart from the Father’s will; even the hairs of your head are numbered. The logic moves from God’s authority to his detailed care, and from his care to your value. The Father who numbers hairs does not overlook souls under threat. I confess that I often measure danger more carefully than I measure the Father’s knowledge of me. Yet Jesus does not promise that bodies will never be harmed; he teaches that no threatened life is neglected or unknown.

This care reaches its clearest proof at the cross and resurrection. Jesus, who taught these words, allowed men to kill his body, but the Father did not abandon him to death. He raised him, securing a living hope for those whose souls rest in him. In Christ, holy fear turns from enslaving dread toward reverence, while courage rests in the Father who sees, values, and keeps his children through death.

Father, teach us to fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body, and therefore to hear, “don’t be afraid.” Numbered hairs and valued souls, keep us near Christ’s cross and resurrection when the body is threatened. Amen.
