For the season when danger feels louder than Christ’s love.
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Could oppression, or anguish, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? Even as it is written, “For your sake we are killed all day long. We were accounted as sheep for the slaughter.” No, in all these things, we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from God’s love which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?” The question does not ask whether danger is real. It names oppression, anguish, persecution, famine, nakedness, peril, and sword, then asks whether any of them can become your severing power. What threat are you treating as stronger than Christ’s love?
Your fear may be trying to purchase safety through control. You rehearse exits, scan every risk, and call the absence of danger proof that you are loved. But Romans 8 does not offer that refuge. It places suffering inside the question and refuses to call suffering separation.
The answer rests on Christ, not your composure: “through him who loved us.” A sword can threaten your life without cutting Christ’s love. Death cannot do it. Life cannot do it. No created power, present or future, can do it. You may be wounded, bereaved, exposed, or afraid; you are not abandoned by God’s love in Christ Jesus. Will you bring this danger to the cross instead of making it your judge?
