For the moment when familiar supports no longer hold.
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we won’t be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas; though its waters roar and are troubled, though the mountains tremble with their swelling.
“Therefore you won’t be afraid” confronts you when the earth changes beneath your plans. What do you do when the mountains you trusted are shaken toward the sea? Do you treat fear as proof that refuge has vanished, or do you ask where you have placed your refuge?
Your actual refuge may be a specific illusion: the carefully maintained plan that promises control. When that plan breaks, fear exposes more than danger. It exposes dependence. You want stable ground before you will trust God. But Psalm 46 names trouble first, then calls God a very present help. Your panic is not imaginary, yet it is trying to make the collapse your master.
God in Christ does not offer distance from the breaking world. The incarnate Son entered it, bore judgment at the cross, and rose bodily from death. Therefore his refuge is not a concept floating above trouble. He is present help for you while stability gives way. The ground can give way without taking God’s refuge with it. Will you bring your failed plan into Christ’s shelter instead of asking it to save you?
