For days when fear keeps every provision behind the gate.

The proverb sets before us a channel dividing water through a thirsty field. Each opening releases what it received; each closed gate leaves the ground dry beyond it. “Scatters” therefore is not reckless motion but deliberate distribution, and the proverb says that such giving can increase. Its picture confronts the instinct to keep every drop behind our own gate.

Scarcity becomes master when fear treats withholding more than appropriate as wisdom. The verse does not bless careless giving, nor does it promise that every generous act produces immediate financial return; it exposes a reversal in the soul: the hand that refuses all release can “gain poverty,” while the liberal soul is made fat. I often call my guardedness prudence when it is fear asking to control what God has entrusted. Openhandedness, then, is not a purchase of prosperity. It is a refusal to let lack become lord, even while needs remain real and wise limits matter.

Christ gives the deepest reason to release what we hold. At the cross, he bore our sin without withholding mercy; his generosity was not drawn from our deserving but poured out for the undeserving. The risen Christ now supplies a living confidence stronger than scarcity’s threat. Scarcity loses mastery when Christ makes generosity a channel, not a wager. Those who water may themselves be watered, not by a bargain they control, but by grace from the crucified and risen Savior, who remains our provision.
