Paul's verb is a stripping. Bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, slander, malice — he names each garment and commands them off. Not managed, not minimized. Put away, the way you'd remove a coat grown too heavy and too soiled to wear. The verse assumes we know the weight of these clothes, how a grudge settles on the shoulders like familiar fabric, how anger can feel like warmth when it is only heat.

The logic runs in one direction: put away, then be kind, tenderhearted, forgiving. The order is the diagnosis — we cannot produce tenderness while still wearing the old coat. I confess I have worn my bitterness like armor, convinced it kept me safe from being wounded again. But the ground of the command is not my resolve; it is the pattern given in the same breath: 'just as God also in Christ forgave you.' The cross is the wardrobe where bitterness is stripped and kindness put on.

At the cross, God in Christ absorbed our malice and answered with pardon. He did not negotiate with our anger or return our outcry; He bore it fully and forgave completely. That is the measure of our forgiveness and the source of our tenderness. The kind heart we are commanded to wear is not manufactured by effort; it is the heart of Christ, given to us in the exchange of the cross, where He was stripped so we could be clothed.
