A daily word for the moment confession feels costly.

Sin is not merely an unpleasant mark we would rather hide; it is uncleanness we cannot remove by naming our excuses. The verse therefore begins with confession: bringing the actual stain into the light before God, without trimming its shape or blaming the fabric. Until sin is confessed, we are still guarding it; we want relief from shame without surrendering the thing that makes shame truthful.

I confess that I often want cleansing without the exposure of confession. Yet the promise does not rest on the eloquence of our admission. He is faithful and righteous: faithful to his covenant, and righteous in forgiving because sin’s judgment has not been ignored. Confession does not persuade a reluctant God to become merciful. It receives the mercy he has pledged to give.

Confession brings the stained garment into the basin; cleansing rests on the faithful righteousness of Christ. At the cross, Jesus bore the guilt that made forgiveness costly, so God remains righteous when he forgives those who confess. In his resurrection, Christ stands as the living assurance that his sacrifice has accomplished what our washing could never accomplish. The basin is open because Christ has finished the work, not because our confession is flawless.
