A devotional for those who keep diving after forgiven sins.

Micah pictures a sea that does not give back. God casts sins into the depths, not to store them in a vault but to lose them where no tide returns them. The sea floor is God's chosen forgetting place, and the waves above it are his silence on the matter. No dredge reaches that deep; no salvage operation is permitted.

The logic runs on delight. God pardons iniquity and passes over disobedience because he delights in loving kindness; compassion is not squeezed out of him but flows from his nature. He does not retain his anger forever, because the remnant of his heritage is not a case to be closed but a people to be kept. He treads our iniquities under foot first, then casts them into the deep. My confession: I keep diving after the sins God has already drowned, as if my retrieval could undo his casting.

At the cross, Christ was the one trodden under foot so that our iniquities could be. The resurrection is the proof that the sea has truly closed: the depths do not give back what they have swallowed. The Father's casting is not a threat held over us; it is a finished act in the risen Son. The sea God chose does not give back what it has swallowed.
