All the prophets testify about him; their testimony is not scattered advice but one unbroken witness: through his name everyone who believes in him receives remission of sins. Remission is not a small discount or a probation period; it is a release, a sending away, the debt itself lifted off the page.

Here is my confession: I often weigh my sorrow against the size of my sin, as if remorse could sign the page. But the verse does not say everyone who feels sorry enough, or everyone who explains sin well enough; it says everyone who believes in him. The strength that saves is not the depth of our repentance but the sufficiency of the name given to us.

That name earned its authority at the cross, where Christ paid the debt he did not owe, and at the resurrection, where the Father raised him as proof that payment is complete. The name is not a charm; it is the person who paid our debt. He is not a vague mood of forgiveness; he is the risen one who stands before the Father interceding for us. So when guilt reads the ledger back to you, do not answer with a better record; answer with his name, because remission is held out to everyone who believes in him.
