For the person learning that forgiveness is costly because grace was costly first.

Costly forgiveness can feel like consenting to be hurt twice. You still remember the complaint against you; your body tightens when the person appears, and “bearing with one another” sounds less like faith than another demand placed on an already exhausted heart. That resistance is not a moral failure to hide. It is the honest cost of releasing a grievance that has seemed to protect you.

Picture a heavy complaint lowered from your shoulder beneath Christ’s cross. You do not call the weight harmless, and you do not pretend the shoulder was never bruised. You stop making the injury your possession and your weapon. The verse joins bearing and forgiving, but it does not require access without wisdom, trust without evidence, or reconciliation without repentance. Forgiveness releases personal vengeance; it may still tell the truth, keep distance, and seek help.

“Forgiveness costs you the right to keep the wound as a weapon because Christ bore your condemnation at the cross.” That is not a command floating above your pain. It is the logic of “even as Christ forgave you”: the mercy you are asked to extend is first mercy received. Scripture says Christ forgave you before your resentment loosened and before you could repay the grace. Jesus’ cross is therefore not cheap niceness but the place where your condemnation was borne, so your complaint need not rule you.
