A psalm for ground that is learning to receive rain.
You visit the earth, and water it. You greatly enrich it. The river of God is full of water. You provide them grain, for so you have ordained it. You drench its furrows. You level its ridges. You soften it with showers. You bless it with a crop. You crown the year with your bounty. Your carts overflow with abundance. The wilderness grasslands overflow. The hills are clothed with gladness. The pastures are covered with flocks. The valleys also are clothed with grain. They shout for joy! They also sing.
There is a quiet suspicion in me that good things must be earned before they can be touched. So when the psalm says God visits the earth and waters it, I notice how different that is from my reflex. The rain does not wait for the field to deserve it. It comes and drenches the furrows, softens the ridges, and blesses the ground with a crop. The field's only part is to be there, open and low enough to absorb what is given.
Picture the smell of rain finding dry soil. The river of God is full of water, and the psalm lets it fall: drenching furrows, leveling ridges, softening hardness until the valley is clothed with grain. I want to stand in that valley, not calculating the yield but letting the water do what it does. Creation receives the bounty before it tries to sing; the singing comes afterward. Gratitude is the furrow receiving rain, glad to be made soft. The hills are not beautiful because they achieved gladness; they are clothed with gladness, as a gift and a garment.
And here is the comfort: Jesus has promised living water to the thirsty, and the Spirit is that river within us. When I am hard, the Father calls me a watered field, visited and enriched. My ridges are not ignored; they are leveled by mercy. The crop is His, the gladness is His, and my only part is to stop resisting the shower and let the valley, at last, shout.
Gratitude is the furrow receiving rain, glad to be made soft.
Giver of rain, loosen my grip. Make me furrow, not accountant; let the shower soften what is hard, and let the valley shout. Amen.
