For the soul learning to receive hope from the risen Christ

Self-reliance does not merely leave us tired; it makes pride the keeper of hope. We try to reason ourselves into confidence, preserve a favorable outcome, and call that faith. But Peter’s language, “born again,” exposes our need: the heart cannot give itself the life it needs. I often treat hope as something I should produce, and that effort leaves the tomb sealed—human strength cannot open what death has closed.

Then Peter directs our eyes to God’s great mercy. The source is God’s mercy; the act is new birth; the result is living hope. This hope is not a fragile mood maintained by favorable circumstances. It is life given from beyond us, and it remains living because its source is the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. The tomb is not the final room for those whom mercy causes to be born again.

The provision is Jesus Christ himself, crucified for sinners and raised from the dead. His resurrection is not merely evidence that hope exists; it is the event through which this living hope comes to us. The risen Christ has passed through death, so those united to him receive a hope death cannot finally close. Living hope begins where self-made hope ends. Pride cannot create it, and fear cannot bury what God has made alive in Christ.
