For the wilderness season, where the new thing is already springing.
“Don’t remember the former things, and don’t consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing. It springs out now. Don’t you know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.
You keep reading the old map of former things, but this wilderness has no landmarks. The path that once carried you is gone, and memory will not rebuild it. What if your insistence on the old road is the very thing keeping you from seeing the new thing? God does not ask you to forget your history; he asks you to stop making it your refuge.
The new thing springs out now, not after you find your bearings. In Christ, God has already cut a way through the wilderness of death and made the Spirit a river in the desert of your dried-up hope. The way is not the road you lost; it is the risen Jesus walking ahead of you. The river is the Spirit inside your parched chest, not your recovered strength.
The wilderness is not the end. God’s new thing is already springing, and the wilderness is not the end. The ground under your feet is not barren; it is the place where the new thing breaks through. Will you drop the old map and watch the green shoot at the edge of the path?
God’s new thing is already springing, and the wilderness is not the end.
Lord, turn my eyes from the old road to the new thing springing in this wilderness.
