For those bringing bodily anguish into prayer.

Psalm 38 sets a body before the Lord with nothing covered: wounds, burning, bruising, groaning, and eyes losing their light. This is not polished religious language. Pain has bowed the singer down, and mourning has become the shape of the day. Bodily anguish can make prayer feel too small or too embarrassing, but this psalm gives it words without requiring the sufferer to make the body sound better than it is.

The psalm also names foolishness beside its wounds, which prevents a shallow reading. Sin may bring real consequences, and confession belongs before God; yet Scripture does not teach that every sickness can be traced to a particular misdeed. I confess that I often want to solve the cause before I dare show the pain, as though a defensible explanation would make me more welcome. David does the opposite: he brings the burning waist, faint strength, throbbing heart, and failing eyes into the same prayer. The failing body can stand before the Lord with nothing hidden. His desire is before the Lord, and his groaning is not hidden. The logic is not that pain has become small, but that no part of it lies outside God's attention.

At the cross, Christ bore sin's judgment and entered real bodily anguish; in his resurrection, he rose bodily. Therefore suffering is brought through the crucified and risen Christ, not placed before an indifferent heaven. This does not promise immediate relief, but it gives the sufferer a merciful Savior who intercedes and a future beyond death.
