For the days when exhaustion has spent every reserve.

Exhaustion is not merely inconvenience; it is the humiliating discovery that even youth and vigor cannot make us self-sustaining. Isaiah begins by pressing questions about what we know and have heard, then sets the everlasting God before our weakness: the Creator does not faint, is not weary, and cannot be measured by our limited understanding. The diagnosis is plain: our strength runs out because we are creatures, while his does not.

The verse then moves from who God is to what he gives. He gives power to the weak and increases strength for the one who has no might. Even the youths faint and grow weary; the young men utterly fall. I confess that I often treat depleted strength as a personal failure, as though exhaustion proved a lack of faith. Scripture does not flatter that fear. It names the collapse honestly, then directs the empty-handed toward the God whose strength is not exhausted.

Those who wait for Yahweh will renew their strength—not because waiting creates power, but because God supplies what weakness cannot produce. The promise reaches its fullness at Christ’s cross, where the Son bore the curse in bodily weakness, and in his resurrection, where death could not retain him. The God who never grows weary gives strength where exhaustion has emptied it. In Christ, the exhausted do not need to pretend they can rise; they receive grace to mount up with wings like eagles, and when they cannot run, to walk without being abandoned.
