For infertility when unanswered longing has left the heart broken and spirit crushed.

The verse begins not with a polished prayer but with a cry. It names righteous people who cry while troubles remain; their pain has not been disqualified by faith. Then its logic moves: Yahweh hears, and delivers; Yahweh is near to the broken heart and saves the crushed spirit. Imagine a cracked bowl set before its maker: the fracture is visible, yet it is not cast aside. Infertility can make the heart feel similarly exposed and damaged. The verse does not shame that condition; it tells the crushed spirit where God’s nearness is found.

Still, “hears” is not the same as promising the child you long for on the schedule you want. “Delivers them out of all their troubles” is stronger than our ability to explain, yet Scripture does not give us permission to invent a timetable. I confess I often treat continued trouble as evidence that the Lord has moved away. But the verse locates God’s nearness precisely with the broken heart. A crushed spirit is not a discarded vessel when Yahweh draws near.

That nearness has a face and a finished work in Jesus Christ. At the cross, the righteous One entered suffering and death; in his resurrection, God established that death would not have the last word. The promise of deliverance therefore rests on Christ, not on an infertility outcome or the strength of your next prayer. Present grief may remain grievous, but it is not abandoned grief: the crucified and risen Christ is near to his people, and final deliverance is secure in him.
