For the season of asking God to establish work again.

The psalm places servants before an empty workbench at morning. They do not hide the long question—how long?—or pretend that afflicted days have been light. They ask for compassion, then for loving kindness sufficient to make them glad. Job loss brings that prayer down to the level of rent, meals, applications, and the silence after a promising interview. The psalm gives no permission to call this easy. It teaches us to bring the ache honestly before Yahweh.

Then the request moves toward work: let the Lord’s work appear, let his favor rest upon his servants, and establish the work of their hands. The order matters. The hands are not first presented as proof of worth; they are dependent hands, asking for favor before they ask for visible results. I confess that I often want established work more than the favor of the Lord who establishes it. Yet the psalm asks for both gladness after affliction and work received as mercy. The hands God establishes are not hands that must prove their worth.

This mercy has a definite center in Christ. At the cross, Jesus bore the judgment our restless labor cannot overcome; in his resurrection, the Father vindicated the Son and secured acceptance for all who belong to him. Therefore a closed workbench cannot pronounce a final verdict on a person whose life is hidden in the crucified and risen Christ. We may ask for employment again without making employment our righteousness. The answer is not promised as a particular position, but the request is held by the favor shown at Calvary and confirmed at the empty tomb.
