For the fear that whispers you will be left behind

Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for Yahweh your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.” Moses called to Joshua, and said to him in the sight of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you shall go with this people into the land which Yahweh has sworn to their fathers to give them; and you shall cause them to inherit it. Yahweh himself is who goes before you. He will be with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be discouraged.”
Deuteronomy 31:6–8

"He will not fail you nor forsake you." Why does your soul treat that phrase as too good to be true? You have seen people leave — some by choice, some by death. And you have made a quiet pact: expect nothing, need no one, and you will never be caught standing in the abandoned place again.

But that fortress is its own loneliness. The self-sufficiency you built to avoid goodbye has closed the door on every hello. You are safe, and you are cold.

God does not merely promise to stay. In Christ, the Son was truly forsaken, so that you would never be. The cross is the place where abandonment ran out of victims. When the Lord says he will not leave, he is not expressing a mood; he is binding himself to you by the wounds he carried. And he does not stay behind you, watching your back — he goes before you. The land you dread is already entered by the One who will not let you go.

So what is there left to fear? Let the Lord's promise be your courage, and walk behind the One who has already gone ahead.

Christ, you were forsaken so I would not be; give me courage to follow where you go.
