For marriages learning that covenant love is stronger than the flood.

The passage pictures covenant love as a seal fixed upon the whole person while many waters rise around it. Set on heart and arm, it speaks of inward affection and visible belonging; the mark is not a mood that disappears when pressure comes. The water may press hard, but it cannot quench what the verse calls love strong as death.

That promise is not sentimental. The same verse places love beside jealousy, calling jealousy cruel as Sheol and naming its flashes as fire. Marriage can expose fear that turns covenant into possession and anger into accusation. I have sometimes wanted the security of love while resisting the costly steadiness love requires. Yet the verse leaves no room for purchase or performance: even all the wealth of a house would be utterly scorned if offered as a substitute for love.

Covenant love is tested by rising waters, but its strength rests in Christ’s cross, not our changing feelings. At the cross, Jesus bore the judgment our jealous hearts deserve and loved his people unto death. His resurrection confirms that death did not master him, so the love secured by his sacrifice is not fragile or temporary. The seal is grace before it is resolve: Christ gives covenant mercy to failing spouses, not as a reward for finally becoming strong.
