For marriages learning tenderness without control.
Let the husband give his wife the affection owed her, and likewise also the wife her husband. The wife doesn’t have authority over her own body, but the husband. Likewise also the husband doesn’t have authority over his own body, but the wife. Don’t deprive one another, unless it is by consent for a season, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer, and may be together again, that Satan doesn’t tempt you because of your lack of self-control.
“Let the husband give his wife the affection owed her” asks a hard question: has your spouse’s body become a claim, a bargaining chip, or a guarded possession? This passage names affection as owed, yet places husband and wife under the same authority over one another’s bodies. Mutual intimacy cannot grow where one body is used as a weapon. In a wounded marriage, demand may stand on one side and withholding on the other. The false refuge is control—using sex, silence, or refusal to secure power. Consent matters: a season apart requires agreement, prayer, and a promised return, not unilateral punishment.
No appeal to “owed” affection permits force, fear, or contempt. The verse aims at tenderness, not access without love. Christ took a human body and gave it at the cross; his self-giving exposes your grasping and your retreat. He meets this exact sin with forgiveness, then calls you toward truthful words, patient touch, and freely shared intimacy. If distance has become a place for temptation, do not hide it behind religious language. Bring the wound into honest conversation and seek wise pastoral or professional help.
Will you surrender the power struggle, name what has made tenderness unsafe, and pursue a mutually agreed return to one another?
Mutual intimacy cannot grow where one body is used as a weapon.
Lord Jesus, forgive our selfishness and teach us to offer our bodies with truth, tenderness, consent, and love.
