A devotional for the season when truth must be welcomed at home.

At the table of marriage, love is known by what it will and will not celebrate. First, the verse refuses delight in unrighteousness: not the private satisfaction of being proved right, nor the pleasure of exposing a spouse’s failure. Then it turns toward truth, where love can rejoice without calling evil good. Truthful love does not feast on unrighteousness; it makes room for truth and endures faithfully.

The verse gives endurance a moral shape. Bearing all things is not covering what must be confessed, and the believing and hoping that follow are not surrendering discernment or renaming repeated harm as faithfulness. Love stays aligned with truth while refusing the quick pleasure of accusation or the easy escape of despair. I have sometimes wanted a spouse’s failure to settle the argument more than I wanted truth to restore the marriage. The apostle’s order corrects that desire: love bears, believes, hopes, and endures because its joy is governed by what is true.

This provision is Christ-shaped, not a summons to manufacture heroic patience. At the cross, Jesus bore the judgment our unrighteousness deserved; there truth was not softened, and mercy was not withheld. In his resurrection, the hope named here has a living foundation. The risen Christ gives guilty spouses forgiveness, so their love need not rest on self-generated endurance. His grace teaches truth to become gladness and endurance to become faithful.
