This does not call evil harmless or require a wounded spouse to pretend that trust has already been restored. It does expose the desire to keep the offense as a private possession. I confess that I have sometimes guarded resentment as though releasing it would surrender justice. Yet the command reaches deeper than changed speech; it calls for a heart no longer organized around the injury.

This grace is possible because forgiveness has already come from God in Christ. At the cross, Jesus bore the judgment our bitterness deserves, including the sins expressed through wrath, outcry, slander, and malice. His forgiveness is not an example detached from power; it is the mercy purchased by his blood and given to those who have no clean record of their own. Christlike kindness begins there, with the forgiven receiving strength to release what they cannot rightly keep.

Lord Jesus, put away bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, slander, and malice from this marriage. Make spouses kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, because God in Christ forgave us.
