For a marriage learning to let peace and gratitude order the shared home.

Picture a shared household charter with peace written as its governing rule. The verse places peace in the hearts of those called into one body, then joins that peace to thankfulness. A home may be occupied by two sincere believers and still be ordered by irritation, scorekeeping, or the loudest voice. Scripture does not call that peace merely the absence of raised voices; it gives peace authority over the inner life from which words and deeds proceed.

Then the charter is filled with the word of Christ, dwelling richly rather than appearing only for emergencies. Wisdom teaches and admonishes one another, while psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs give gratitude a voice. I confess that I often want my spouse corrected before I am willing to be corrected, which leaves little room for the word of Christ to govern either heart. Peace and gratitude do not excuse sin or silence needed admonition; they determine the spirit and aim of it. Peace orders a shared home when Christ’s word, not marital irritation, gets the final say.

This order is grace purchased, not a household achievement. At the cross, Christ bore the guilt and hostility that make peace with God impossible for sinners; in his resurrection, he rose as the living Lord whose name claims every word and deed. Therefore the shared home is brought under his authority, and thanks rises to God the Father through him. The charter is not kept by impressive restraint, but by returning to the crucified and risen Jesus, whose grace makes truthful correction and grateful obedience possible.
