For the season when grace gives what effort cannot: a new heart and Spirit.

Ezekiel presents a new beginning as a basin receiving what the heart cannot provide for itself. Clean water is sprinkled over a person marked by filthiness and idols, not because the stain is slight, but because God graciously cleanses what has defiled us. The promise reaches deeper than improved behavior: Grace does not decorate the old heart; it replaces stone with living flesh.

That order matters. Cleansing comes before the new heart; the new heart comes before the new spirit; and the Spirit comes before the obedient walk. The passage does not flatter our natural condition. A stony heart is unmoved toward God, and idols are not harmless preferences when they claim the devotion that belongs to him. I have often wanted the obedience of a living heart while protecting the hardness that resists God's rule. The promised change is therefore God's gift from beginning to end, not a renovation managed by religious determination.

This grace has a name and a cost in Jesus Christ. At the cross, Christ bore the judgment owed by idolaters and the unclean; in his resurrection, he rose as the living Savior who gives what his people lack. His death secures cleansing, and his risen life is the ground of the Spirit's indwelling presence. The Spirit does not merely command the walk; he makes new obedience possible within those whom grace has changed. The basin is filled by mercy purchased at Calvary, and the heart made flesh belongs to the risen Lord.
