For the first step when the map is still folded.

Going when God calls can feel less like courage than bereavement. You may be grieving familiar rooms, family nearness, a settled identity, and the comfort of knowing what tomorrow requires. That fear does not make you faithless. It means the leaving is costly, especially when you cannot yet see what will replace what you lose.

Picture Abram at the edge of his father’s house: the dust under his sandals, the voices of relatives behind him, the open country ahead, and no visible outline of the land promised to him. He is told to leave his country, his relatives, and his father’s house before he can see where the road ends. The command gives him a direction, not a complete itinerary. At seventy-five, he does not receive a pass because he is young, fearless, or fully informed. He goes because the call has come.

Faith can leave the house before it can see the road. Abram’s obedience is real, but it is not presented as self-generated certainty. The Father calls him into a future larger than private safety, and the promised blessing is meant to pass through him to others. Jesus calls his people to follow him in this same relinquishment of control, while the cross shows that Christ himself has entered the cost of obedience and borne it for them. Your unseen road is not proof that you have been abandoned; Christ has already gone into suffering, death, and resurrection before you.

Lord Jesus, release me from needing the whole road. Give me grace for the next step, and keep me near you when leaving hurts. Amen.
