An Ebenezer devotion for starting again.
Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpah and Shen, and called its name Ebenezer, saying, “Yahweh helped us until now.”
A stone was set between Mizpah and Shen, and on it hung the whole meaning of 'until now.' Have you passed that stone without reading the name? Stop asking whether God has helped. Ask whether you will let 'until now' be the ground under your next step.
New beginnings tempt you to disown your history. You tell yourself that remembering yesterday's rescue will load down today's fresh start, so you take refuge in amnesia, as if erasing the Ebenezer could make you the author of the road ahead.
But God does not let His help evaporate with the past. In Christ He has set up a stone that cannot be rolled away: the cross, His one decisive help for sinners, and the Spirit who brings that help to mind when your memory fails. The help you have already received is the ground you walk on now. Set the stone down once more.
