For parents teaching faith in the ordinary turns of home.

Deuteronomy 6 begins with love for Yahweh—love involving all the heart, soul, and might. Only then does it speak of these words being on the heart and being taught to children. That order diagnoses us: we can try to make faith visible in our children while our own love remains divided, hurried, or merely verbal. The command reaches the parent before it reaches the lesson.

Then Scripture places faith within the four turns of a household day: sitting in the house, walking by the way, lying down, and rising up. Teaching is diligent, but it is not confined to a religious occasion. It takes place as the day repeatedly turns through its ordinary places and hours. I confess that I often want faith to appear in carefully managed moments rather than in the steady speech and love of daily life. Faith is taught less by special events than by the ordinary turns where love keeps speaking.

This does not leave us staring at our inconsistency. At the cross, Jesus offered the wholehearted obedience we have failed to give and bore the judgment our divided love deserves. The risen Christ now intercedes for imperfect parents and children, so our home is not sustained by our spiritual performance. His grace meets us as we sit, walk, lie down, and rise up, making even our weakness a place to receive his mercy.
