For the parent longing to see repentance, not merely changed circumstances.

Ezekiel’s word places every person on a road that leads somewhere: Yahweh judges each one according to his ways, and transgression is not a harmless detour. Left unturned, iniquity becomes ruin. For a prodigal loved one, this means the deepest need is not simply safety, success, or restored family closeness, but repentance before the God who desires life. The Lord’s refusal to delight in death opens a road toward life.

The commands are plain: return, turn from transgressions, cast them away. No parent can make this turn for another, and no anxious prayer can substitute for the loved one’s repentance. I confess that I often want a loved one’s return more than a loved one’s repentance, because restored nearness would ease my grief. Yet Yahweh’s question—why die?—uncovers the true danger and the mercy pressing behind his command: he calls sinners away from ruin because he does not take pleasure in their death.

This mercy does not rest on our ability to manufacture a new heart or a new spirit. At the cross, Jesus bore the judgment our ways deserve; in his resurrection, he entered the life Yahweh commands and now gives to those united to him. Therefore prayer for a prodigal is prayer to the crucified and risen Christ, whose grace can bring real repentance without promising us control over its hour. The road back is opened by his finished work, not by a parent’s effort.
