For the elder child who hears the music but will not go in.

“Now his elder son was in the field. As he came near to the house, he heard music and dancing. He called one of the servants to him, and asked what was going on. He said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he has received him back safe and healthy.’ But he was angry, and would not go in. Therefore his father came out, and begged him. But he answered his father, ‘Behold, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed a commandment of yours, but you never gave me a goat, that I might celebrate with my friends. But when this your son came, who has devoured your living with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him.’ “He said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. But it was appropriate to celebrate and be glad, for this, your brother, was dead, and is alive again. He was lost, and is found.’ ”

You are near enough to hear the music and dancing, and you will not go in. What are you protecting—your record of unbroken obedience, or the joy you have convinced yourself you never needed?

You have served, and you have not disobeyed, and somewhere the service turned into a ledger. You stopped listening to the Father and started keeping score against the brother who wasted everything. But refusing to enter is not obedience; it is a quiet exile built from your own good behavior.

The Father comes out to you. He does not dispute your record. He answers your resentment with a word of complete inheritance: 'Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours.' The Father speaks 'all that is mine is yours' to the one who will not go in. And Christ, the true obedient Son, did not stand outside; He entered the joy of rescue and carried the cost of it on His own shoulders.

Eating a goat in the yard would only have made you more alone. Will you let the Father's plea carry you across the threshold into His celebration?

Give me joy enough to cross the yard and go in.
