For the long nights of waiting.

I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? My help comes from Yahweh, who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. Yahweh is your keeper. Yahweh is your shade on your right hand. The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. Yahweh will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. Yahweh will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.
Psalm 121:1–8

You know the particular fatigue of loving someone who is still out in the night. The house is quiet, yet your body stays braced; you listen for the car turning into the drive, or the text that never comes. What keeps you awake is not weak faith; it is love that took the job of watching, and the watching has outgrown your strength.

The psalm lifts its eyes to the hills and finds a keeper who does not slumber. Night passes; the keeper's watch does not flag. There is a lamp in this psalm's doorway: your going out and your coming in are held by One who does not blink against the dark. Let your spine unbrace a little. The one you love walks ahead of you into a keeping that began before your hands held theirs, and it will not end when your strength does. You are not asked to keep the night watch; you are asked to be kept.

The Father calls you the kept one before he calls you the keeper. Jesus rose from the night of the grave and stands as the living witness that no going out or coming in escapes the keeper's notice. Your place beside your loved one is not the sleepless vigilance; it is the held place of someone whose name is already written in the keeping.

You are not asked to keep the night watch; you are asked to be kept.
Prayer

Keeper of the hills and the thresholds, I lay down my watching tonight. Receive the going out and the coming in of the one I love; keep them as you have kept me. Let my tired eyes close, and let your waking be enough. Amen.
