For the season when singleness feels like an unassigned life.

Psalm 16 presents life as an inheritance whose boundaries are not left to chance. The portion is assigned, the cup is given, and the lot is made secure; even the lines fall in pleasant places. Singleness may feel like an unmarked stretch outside the future you imagined, but this verse presses a deeper question: what has the Lord himself placed into your hands? Your marital status is not the measure of your share in him. The Lord is the portion, and that inheritance cannot be reduced by an unmarried season.

The ache is real because singleness can make the future seem unstable. You may compare your portion with another person’s, resent the lines drawn around your life, or treat marriage as the proof that your lot has finally become secure. I confess that I can measure God’s goodness by the portion I hoped he would assign, rather than by the Lord who gives himself. Such comparison does not merely expose longing; it reveals how quickly the heart calls a good inheritance insufficient when it does not arrive in the desired form.

The security of this inheritance rests finally on Christ, not on your ability to feel satisfied with your circumstances. At the cross, Jesus bore the judgment owed to grasping hearts and purchased a people for God. In his resurrection, the crucified Christ entered indestructible life, so those joined to him possess an inheritance death cannot cancel. Christ’s cross does not pretend that singleness cannot hurt; it secures the sinner who brings that hurt to him. Christ himself is the good portion, and union with him is grace already given.
