A devotional for singleness when many demands compete for your attention.

The scene is a room where one sister is seated at Jesus’ feet while another is pulled across the room by much serving. Martha’s work is real, but her attention has become scattered; anxiety and trouble have filled the room more fully than Jesus’ word. Singleness can expose the same disorder: the pressure to be useful, available, or approved can make receiving Christ feel less urgent than managing every demand. The diagnosis is not that service has no place, but that divided attention has mistaken many things for the one thing needed.

Jesus addresses Martha by name, then names her condition: anxious and troubled about many things. His correction is not contempt for her, nor praise for passivity. He declares that Mary has chosen the good part, the portion found by remaining near him and hearing his word. Christ welcomes your undivided attention without making singleness a sentence of waiting. I confess that I often let legitimate responsibilities crowd out the living Lord who is already present.

This welcome rests on more than a quiet moment. At the cross, Jesus bore the judgment our distracted hearts deserve, and his resurrection established his living claim over those joined to him. Therefore the place at his feet is secured by Christ’s finished work, not by a single person’s ability to remain perfectly focused. The good part is Christ himself, received by grace, and what he gives will not be taken away.

Lord Jesus, quiet the anxious and troubled heart amid many things, and make one thing needed clear. Grant the good part that will not be taken away, through your cross and resurrection. Amen.
