For the season when prayer feels unanswered.
How long, Yahweh? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart every day? How long shall my enemy triumph over me? Behold, and answer me, Yahweh, my God. Give light to my eyes, lest I sleep in death; lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed against him;” lest my adversaries rejoice when I fall. But I trust in your loving kindness. My heart rejoices in your salvation.
“How long?” is not a failed prayer. It is the cry of a heart that feels forgotten and still turns toward Yahweh. You may be taking counsel in your soul while sorrow sits in your heart every day. The false refuge is the private verdict that God has abandoned you. Rehearsing it can feel like honesty, but it is surrender to the silence.
Psalm 13 gives that fear an address: “Behold, and answer me, Yahweh, my God.” Ask for light to your eyes. Do not deny that an enemy seems to triumph, or pretend waiting is painless. The risen Christ intercedes for you before the Father. His living advocacy does not depend on your feeling his face turned toward you.
The psalm moves toward trust without erasing the question. “Continuing prayer keeps the question turned toward God.” Loving kindness and salvation are named while the cry is still being made. Christ’s intercession holds you when your own counsel accuses you. Keep asking for light, and let his faithfulness outlast your felt absence.
Continuing prayer keeps the question turned toward God.
Lord Jesus, intercede for me in the silence; give light to my eyes, and keep me trusting your loving kindness. Amen.
