For a soul whose old songs make today's silence more noticeable.
As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants after you, God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? My tears have been my food day and night, while they continually ask me, “Where is your God?” These things I remember, and pour out my soul within me, how I used to go with the crowd, and led them to God’s house, with the voice of joy and praise, a multitude keeping a holy day. Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise him for the saving help of his presence.
Spiritual dryness has become sharper because you remember worship. The memory does not merely comfort you; it places the present beside the past, where tears have become your food and the old sound of praise makes silence feel personal. You are thirsty, discouraged, and perhaps ashamed that remembering God’s house has not brought you back to its joy. The psalm gives those feelings a voice without pretending they are small.
The deer in the psalm is not performing thirst; its body knows what it lacks. So your longing is not evidence of spiritual failure. It is painful knowledge of absence, intensified by memory: you once went with the crowd, carried by voices, praise, and a holy day, and now you cannot summon that gathered gladness on command. Remembered worship can expose thirst without proving God has left. The accusing question about God’s whereabouts may come from other people, from loneliness, or from inside your own exhausted mind.
Then the psalmist speaks to his own soul, not with a denial of despair but with a direction: hope in God, because praise will still be possible through saving help. Jesus says the thirsty are welcome to come to him; the incarnation makes that welcome concrete, the living God drawing near in a human body. He does not shame your dry mouth or demand yesterday’s song. He meets you as one who is known, while desire remains unfinished.
Remembered worship can expose thirst without proving God has left.
Jesus, I am thirsty, and remembered worship hurts today. Receive my tears. Keep me near while I wait, and teach me to trust your saving help without pretending I feel full. Amen.
