A prayer for the soul asking God to restore joy and willingness.

The prayer brings a stained clay vessel before God without pretending it is clean. It asks for a clean heart, a right spirit, and restored joy; the order matters. Sin has not merely made the soul sad. It has bent the inner will, disturbed nearness to God, and left the petitioner unable to manufacture the gladness he asks to receive. Restored joy is received through cleansing, not earned by a willing spirit.

The plea therefore reaches deeper than improved feelings. “Don’t throw me from your presence” names the terror beneath spiritual dryness: not simply that worship feels empty, but that the sinner cannot repair fellowship by force of mood. “Don’t take your Holy Spirit from me” asks for sustaining mercy, while “Uphold me with a willing spirit” admits that obedience must itself be given. I often ask for joy as relief before I ask God to cleanse what has made joy impossible. The prayer corrects that order without crushing the petitioner: God is asked to create, renew, restore, and uphold.

That mercy has a name and a cost. At Christ’s cross, the guilt that stains the heart was judged in the sinless Son, so cleansing is more than a hopeful wish. In his resurrection, Christ rose to secure living fellowship for his people; the Holy Spirit is not a prize for the willing but God’s gracious gift, making renewed obedience possible. The vessel is washed and steadied by grace, and the requested joy rests in the salvation accomplished by the crucified and risen Christ, not in spiritual performance.
